  • Killer Whale Born At SeaWorld

    Friday, January 8, 2010
SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS - There's been an addition to the SeaWorld San Antonio family.

Park officials say an 18-year killer whale named Takara gave birth to an orca calf in Shamu Theater, the park's research and breeding facility.

A park news release says Takara delivered the 6-foot calf Thursday after about an hour's labor. Its gender is still to be determined and it is still in the critical first few days of bonding with its mother and beginning to nurse. That's according to Chris Bellows, the park's vice president of zoological operations.

Park officials say the calf is the 26th orca to be born at SeaWorld's three parks.
