  • Killer Whales Sighted Off Sydney Australia

    Saturday, October 25, 2008
SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA - Overseas tourists on a nature-watching cruise got the shock of their lives after encountering one of the largest pods of killer whales sighted near Sydney.

More than 10 distinctive black and white orcas, as long as 12m, were seen about 50km off the coastline late on Friday afternoon.

Halicat Tours operator Hal Epstein said the boat was bound for home when it came across the pod.

"We spotted this 2m dorsal fin sticking out of the water and then saw the pod," he said.

"There were about 10 of them doing their thing, moving around in the ocean."

"After doing these tours for 14 years, I've seen my share of sperm whales, dolphins, humpbacks _ but never killer whales. It is such a rare occurrence - it was our lucky day."
