  • Killer Whales Spotted In Andaman Sea

    Wednesday, March 28, 2007
THAILAND - Scuba divers spot a herd of killer whales or orcas in Surin Islands of the Andaman Sea, Phangnga Province.

Dr.Thorn Thamrongnawasawadi says he was reported of the orca herd by scuba drivers and tourists who passed the Khao Khad Strait in the Surin Islands. The whales were seen swimming in the sea, drawing a number of curious onlookers.

Dr.Thorn is an academic of the Department of Marine Science, Faculty of Fisheries, Kasetsart University.

According to Dr.Thorn, the whales entered the Thai territorial sea to find food, especially manta rays. The El Nino phenomenon has lowered the temperature of the Andaman Sea, turning the sea into an abundant source of food for marine predators.

Killer whales or orcas are predators and the average length of their body is longer than five meters. They are not considered as a threat to humans.
