  • Orcas Sighted Off Kitsap Peninsula

    Friday, November 3, 2006
SEATTLE, WASHINGTON - Two groups of killer whales were seen this morning off Seattle's Alki Point and then later near Vashon Island before turning and heading north shortly before 9 a.m., according to Susan Berta of Orca Network.

Area residents are encouraged to watch for orcas from shore but not go out in boats, Berta said.

She is staying in touch with federal researchers who would like to locate orcas in central and south Puget Sound for studies on what the animals are eating in the fall and winter.

"I would like people to keep their eyes open and call us right away," Berta said.

The two groups of Puget Sound orcas spotted this morning were K and L pods.

The third group, J pod, remained in the San Juan Islands, Berta said.

Anyone who sees killer whales is urged to call (866) ORCANET or e-mail susan@orcanetwork.org.
