GOLD RIVER, BC — Luna has apparently adjusted his location a bit to spend most of his time in between his most familiar territory and Gold River. He hasn’t been near the docks much lately, but has been seen regularly near fish farms farther down the Sound. He has also spent time in the same area with one of his favourite boats, a large landing craft that works all over Nootka Sound.

He was seen recently playing in the vicinity of a couple of seals. The report we got said he wasn’t hunting them, but it was also reported to us that he was pushing around the carcass of a seal. This seemed unexpected, given that he’s a resident and would not be expected to eat seal meat, but the report was that the carcass looked pretty old and that it was likely that Luna just found it and was playing with it, rather than eating it.

We went out on the water in our old Zodiac on Wednesday, and went through all the territory where Luna has been seen recently, but didn’t see him. We also replaced the batteries in the Luna Live system so that the researchers who are listening for Luna can hear him if he calls near the hydrophone. It is possible that he may spend some time near the hydrophone, since he seems to be basing himself closer to it than in the past few weeks. On Thursday the crew of the landing craft saw him only a couple of kilometers from the hydrophone’s location.
