  • Transients In Nootka Sound; Luna OK

    Tuesday, March 22, 2005
GOLD RIVER, BC – Last Friday, transient orcas were seen in Nootka Sound. Transient orcas prey on other marine mammals, so each time they are reported in the Sound there are concerns for Luna. Luna is a lone juvenile Southern Resident orca who has been separated from his pod for over three years.

In the past, Luna has been observed to hide and stay very still when transients are in the area. It is obvious that he can tell the difference between transients and resident orcas, which is remarkable, considering his young age.

Luna was not spotted when the transients were in the area, but has been seen many times since then. Luna continues to forage in his usual spots.

The recent Herring Fishery has ended with no reported incidents between Luna and boats. Throughout the winter, Luna has, for the most part, not had interference from boats.

This could change in a few months when the tourist boating season begins. A stewardship plan must be put in place soon to protect Luna and the public.
