Canadian Authorities Reconsidering Decision About Luna |
||
Wednesday, July 30, 2003VANCOUVER ISLAND -- Things might soon change for Luna, the local orca living far from home off the west coast of Vancouver Island. We've learned that Canadian authorities are now reconsidering their decision to do nothing with the lone killer whale. No one knows why Luna, a healthy male orca, is alone in remote Nootka Sound, on the west side of Vancouver Island. Those who are charged with protecting him, see more alarming behavior every day. Until now, though, Canada's Department of Fisheries and Oceans has decided not to intervene or bring the 4-year-old killer whale back to family in Puget Sound. A year ago, another young, solo orca -- Springer -- was captured near Seattle, taken home to Canada and released to her pod. Scientists declared the Springer experiment a total success when she returned to Vancouver Island with family just three weeks ago. That's ratcheting up the pressure now on Canada to help Luna. "DFO clearly has a management problem on their hands, they thought by ignoring it, it'd just go away. But that has proven not to be the case," said Fred Felleman of Orca Conservancy. So, DFO is consulting an internal scientific panel to consider these 3 options: Leave Luna in Nootka Sound, put him in captivity, or try to reunite him with his family. Canadian officials are expected to announce what they're going to do with Luna in the coming week or so, but time is of the essence because his family typically leaves Puget Sound waters by late fall. Many grassroots efforts are supporting action on Luna. For example, a petition is now offered online that people can sign to get Luna back with his family. Two women in Canada have started an online petition that people can sign if they want to see something done about reuniting the lone orca, Luna, or L-98, with members of "L" pod. So far, they have 800 signatures in about 5 days time. It will submitted to Canadian officials soon. |
